Spice up your Sunday! Come to the City of Santa Monica’s Cinco de Mayo Festival on May 6th from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. at Virginia Avenue Park. A variety of amusements await you! Enter your best salsa recipe in the Homemade Salsa Tasting Contest, play Lotería and win prizes, or participate in the Traditional Fashion Contest, and kids will enjoy playing games, rides and making crafts! When you snag a great item at a flea market, you feel terrific. It’s even more exciting when the flea market is a fundraising event to support a worthy cause. Melrose Trading Post is a project of the Greenway Arts Alliance to benefit the Greenway Friends of Fairfax and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Students from Fairfax High School, in whose parking lot the market is run every Sunday (9 a.m. – 5 p.m. rain or shine), participate in the operation. Over the years, some of the proceeds have supported athletics, theater, civic field trips, and scholarships, while giving students meaningful responsibility and service opportunities.
Approximately 200 vendors pack the market each week, selling everything from antiques and vintage collectibles to clothing and boots. The waiting list of vendors hoping for a table testifies to the popularity of the event. Shoppers come in the thousands each Sunday—many buy jewelry, housewares, small furniture, and more. Many try to negotiate the prices; some succeed! A food court and a jazz band contribute to the happy destination atmosphere. Admission is $2, but you can download a 50 percent discount coupon from the website.

The 27th Annual City of Los Angeles Marathon takes place this Sunday, March 18. The course for this year's 26.2-mile race is the same as last year, from Dodger Stadium near Downtown Los Angeles to the ocean in Santa Monia — from the Stadium to the Sea. The City of Los Angeles has finalized street closures and restricted parking, as well as security strategies and public safety measures to support the race. The marathon begins on Sunday morning at 6:55 a.m. for wheelchairs, 7:00 a.m. for hand cycles and 7:25 a.m. for all other participants.
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation urges you to drive cautiously and be sure to obey all posted "temporary no parking" signs.
Various Streets along the marathon route will be closed by 3:15 a.m. on March 18, then reopened as early as 10:15 a.m., depending on the location. Streets will reopen by region because of the size and complexity of the event route. Numerous agencies, including LADOT, California State Department of Transportation and the City of Los Angeles Police and Fire Departments were consulted in the planning process and agree that the finalized plan is the best way to accommodate all of the parties involved.
LADOT will begin to strictly enforce a restricted, no-parking policy for the marathon on the morning of March 18. This will include citing and impounding of vehicles parked on these temporarily restricted, no-parking streets. Vehicles parked on the streets noted on the street closure list (see below) will be towed to the Official Police Garage (OPG) servicing those respective areas, at the request of the Department of Transportation. Motorists are advised to call (213). 485.4184 and select option 2 or check the OPG website to locate and redeem vehicles.

If you can’t get it in Los Angeles, it’s fair to say you probably can’t get it anywhere. But driving all around the City of Angels in that notorious traffic to do your shopping is a one-way ticket to road rage. That’s why it’s great that The Grove exists. A one-stop shopping destination located on part of the historic Farmer’s Market, The Grove offers a 575,000 square foot outdoor shopping experience with a lot of options. In addition to stores like Nordstrom, Banana Republic and Abercrombie & Fitch, which located its West Coast flagship store there, there are dozens of other retailers offering just about anything you could want. A trolley system links the Grove and the adjacent Farmer’s Market for easy travel. In the center of the plaza is a huge animated fountain that performs multiple synchronized water shows, one with music on the half hour. If you want to see a movie, the 14-screen theater has all the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

If you’re a snow bunny, California has a huge array of ski areas for you to choose from. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the popular choices.
Mt. High is easy to get to, just 15 minutes from I-15, but as a result it can often be very crowded with skiers and snowboarders who praise the well-kept grounds.
A full-service winter resort located in the eastern Sierra Mountains, Mammoth Mountain is a massive park that boasts 150 trails, 28 lifts, and 3,500 acres of skiing to enjoy.
Bear Mountain, located in the San Bernadino mountains, attracts a devoted fanbase of winter sports enthusiasts who rave over it’s friendliness to snowboarders and free skiers—instead of manicured trails, Bear Mountain regulars go where their intuition takes them, and explore over 180 man-made features including a half pipe for snowboard tricks.
